10 Outdoor Spring Cleaning Projects
Spring cleaning isn’t exciting for a lot of us. But it needs to be done. As the winter come to an end and we start looking forward to spring and warmer weather, something inside of us tells us to get our homes in order by cleaning, organizing and throwing away things we’ve piled up throughout the winter months.
But who says spring cleaning is limited to the inside of a house?
The exterior of your house could likely use a little refreshing after a cold, dreary winter, too!
It’s Time For Home Exterior Cleaning
Here are home exterior cleaning projects that will really improve the curb appeal of your house in Hampton, and, more importantly, will provide much-needed care and maintenance that will save you a lot of money in years ahead.
1. Gutter Cleaning
Spring is the best time of year to clean out your gutters, since a lot of leaves and debris accumulate in the fall and winter months. Pollen is at its highest in the spring, making a big mess in your gutters and downspouts if they are not cleaned.
Plus, bugs and critters are looking for places to build their homes in spring, so having your gutters cleaned out will help to prevent an infestation in your home.
Gutter cleaning will consist of cleaning the inside and outside of your gutters, removing mold, mildew, rust stains and returning them to a like-new appearance.
2. Window Cleaning
Exterior window cleaning is a must for spring cleaning. First floor windows won’t cause you much of an issue, but second and third floor windows can be a bit trickier to reach.
Cleaning windows by hand is a tough chore, and it will need a lot of supplies, not to mention climbing up and down a ladder! A soft wash or professional cleaning of your exterior windows is the recommended way to get the panes and the outer frame clean.
3. Pressure Washing
You aren’t going to want clean gutters and clean windows on a dirty house. Which means you will want to pressure wash your house too!
Pressure washing is quick, effective and affordable. You can clean your house, patio furniture, patios, wood and stone porches and walkways with not much effort. It will knock off dirt and mud so they will not stain your house, and you can also prevent the spread of mold, mildew and allergens.
4. Driveway Cleaning
Clearing off your driveway and giving it a deep cleaning may seem silly since you will still be driving on it, but actually, a clean, maintained driveway can increase the curb appeal of your house.
A professional pressure washer can do wonders for driveway cleaning, whether it is concrete, asphalt, stone or another material. Also think about adding a gravel border to your driveway to really help it pop!
5. Patio Cleaning
Your patio probably gets the most use during the summer months, so it is easy to forget about it in the winter since you are not doing a lot of outdoor entertaining, leisure or grilling. Your patio could be in pretty bad condition the first time you go onto it in the spring.
Soap and water – and a little elbow grease – are sometimes be enough for patio cleaning, but if you notice signs of mold or algae, you might need to think about a more serious option, like professional power washing, to guarantee that friends and family can enjoy your patio all summer.
6. Roof Cleaning
Mold and moss are common roof issues in Hampton. While you are cleaning the exterior of your house, it is a great time to clean your roof as well, but you will have to use a different method than the one you use for the rest of your home’s exterior cleaning.
If you start to notice streaks on your roof, algae is most likely the cause. Moss is usually obvious, too. These contaminants can’t be scrubbed off of shingles, nor can you pressure wash the roof of your house. Both of these methods will ruin the shingles on your roof.
The best method for roof cleaning is to mist the shingles with a half-bleach, half-water mixture and leave it be. This solution will eliminate all organic organisms on your roof without lowering its lifespan.
7. Tidy up the Front
The front of your house is likely what most people see, so try to make the best impression you can for visitors and for yourself! Returning home to a well-maintained exterior will immediately improve your day, and it will even motivate you to spend a lot more time outdoors.
You can clean your porch with detergent and water or a good pressure wash. Wipe cobwebs and mud off of the front door, and think about painting it for a bright look! Clean forgotten areas like the porch ceiling, light fixtures and ceiling fans, too.
8. Organize Outdoor Tools
You’ll soon be spending much more time outdoors, so spring is a great opportunity to organize the things you will need for outdoor chores.
Gardening tools and pool care equipment need to all have an exact area outside your house – somewhere that it is safe from weather and not in sight so it isn’t a constant eyesore to anyone. Taking the time to organize in the spring allows you to appreciate the exterior of your house so much more during the time of year when you spend the most time outdoors.
9. Lawn Care & Landscaping
Your yard, trees and garden bushes can make a big impact on the overall look of your house.
Remove weeds near your flower beds and walkways and driveway, till up places where you might be planting in the future and brush off walkways. You can also spray pre-emergent weed killer to make yard care easier on yourself throughout the summer. Trim all the bushes too.
10. Clean the Grill
After sitting unused for months, your gas or charcoal grill could use a good cleaning, too. Leftover grease and food particles from your grill are definitely unappetizing, but they can also make you and your family sick.
Wipe it down to get rid of ash, then scrub the grates with a scrubber (so you do not leave behind metal particles that can get into food) and a basic detergent or degreaser.
